Menswear accessories by Barbour

Barbour’s history dates all the way back to 1894 where it started off in the Market Place in South Shields (north east England) and was originally known as J Barbour & Sons. The brand is renowned for its wax cotton and quilted jackets. “Wherever men need to be protected, Barbours will do it for you.” This is a quote found in its brochure, dated 1908. Its jackets were originally made for those inhabiting the countryside but today the jackets would suit both rural and urban dwellers.

Last November saw the opening of its very first Barbour International on Piccadilly, very near Piccadilly Circus. It now has 11 stores in the UK and has a presence in over 40 countries worldwide.

Over Christmas John Lewis wanted me to try out a few things from its Barbour collection, so I ordered a pair of quilted leather gloves, Birtly Argyle socks and a Gowan Check scarf from John Lewis online. I have always wanted a pair of quilted gloves – I pretty much love anything in quilt: jackets, gloves, bags – you name it. Quilt just makes everything look more luxurious and Barbour produce them to perfection. The scarf is quite soft as you would expect and the quality didn’t disappoint. One problem with woollen products, particularly scarves is that they can easily end up with lots of little annoying bobbles – something that ruins the look for me, and it is with great relief that I haven’t yet encountered that problem with this one… yet. I don’t like plain socks at all, and would rather not be seen wearing them so picking an argyle pair was a no-brainer. I love the argyle pattern – it’s such a classic look.
